The Importance of Regular Tire Rotations

Each and every month, the certified technicians at Heritage CDJR Harrisburg, Owings Mills & Parkville see hundreds of tires worn out long before their time. In almost all of these instances, the expenses could have been prevented if the owner would have followed the tire manufactures' recommendations on tire rotations.

So what is tire rotation?

Tire rotation is the practice of moving the wheels and tires of a vehicle from one position to another to ensure even tire wear. Even tire wear is desirable and necessary to extend the useful life of a set of tires.

The weight of your front and rear axles differs, which causes uneven wear. Front-wheel-drive vehicles not only have the engine up front, but also the transmission and axle assemblies, adding to the weight differential. This extra weight means additional stress is disproportionately placed on the front tires by braking and steering. Because of this, front-wheel-drive vehicles should have their tires rotated more frequently.

All the major tire manufacturers recommend tire rotation starting at 5,000 miles, although there are some that stretch it to 6,000 miles.  If you want to know what the recommended rotation schedule is on your tires, simply reach out to our Service Department.
